Monday Manicure: Revlon Whimsical

I’m a fan of my new sparkly nail polish. I picked up a bottle of Revlon Whimsical online because I heard it was a dead-on dupe (duplicate) of Deborah Lippmann’s Glitter in the Air. The reason so many people have been excited by this in the blog world is the price difference. Revlon averages about $5 for a bottle of polish whereas a bottle of Deborah Lippmann’s nail polish will set you back a cool $18. I admit that I am torn on supporting a product that is an outright copy of another company’s idea but in the fashion world it happens ALL. THE. TIME. It is unavoidable. Example: That gold chain strap on your quilted leather purse that is so trendy right now? Yeah, that’s a copy of the classic Chanel style. And I saw a Nine West bag today that was almost an exact dupe in shape, size, color, and construction to a much more pricey Michael Kors bag that I own. Copycats are unavoidable.

That said, $18 for a bottle of nail polish is something that I would consider splurging on if it was a shade that was unlike any other or one that I’d use all the time. This shade, while cute, fit neither of the “splurge” requirements so I purchased Revlon instead. This is two coats of the polish over a basecoat with a shiny clear topcoat:

I think my cuticles needed a smidge of lotion before their photo op, right? Oops! I definitely needed two coats to get the glitter to the level it is on my nails and of course that, like any chunky glitter polish, required some manipulation to get the flecks just where I wanted them. Anyway, I think it turned out lovely. It’s subtle, too, when applied over just a basecoat. It does have a bluish tint in some light but that picture is pretty much right on. Of course, you could apply a coat of light blue or white polish under this and have a totally different and more opaque look. I might try that sometime in the summer because I think this shade is actually too light for the season applied that way but as is worked very well for a holiday weekend. You could also apply a lot more than I did for a heavier sparkle but I lose patience!

In case you are wondering, here’s a comparison photo of the two polishes side by side:

There are lots of places to buy this nail polish, if you want it. You could try Ulta or Amazon or even eBay. I got mine on eBay for about $7 total. Some sites have said it’s discontinued but since it’s in stock at Ulta’s website I’m inclined to think perhaps it was brought back. For my other posts about nail polish, click here.

What is on your nails this week? Any polish recommendations?
